The No. 19 Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team suffered their first loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Seattle Pacific. The Antelopes now own a 3-1-0 overall record, while the Falcons remained perfect at 4-0-0. The game marked the first regular season road game and final non-conference matchup for GCU.
“I am at a loss for words,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “We took a lead and then tried to play soccer and pass the ball around. It was a very physical game. My guys were in for a surprise. We just were not good enough tonight. I give a lot of credit to SPU, they punished us quick.”
Seattle Pacific accumulated 15 shots, four of which were on goal, while GCU had 10 shots and three on goal. Both goalkeepers had two saves on the night.
The two teams combined for nine shots in the first half, with GCU accounting for six of those, two of which were on goal.
Chris Green scored the first goal of the game in the 37
th minute on a punched corner kick from
Saeed Robinson to the right side of the net. The goal was the first for Green this season.
The ‘Lopes were on the defense for most of the second half, as they were outshot by the Falcons by a margin of 12-4. GCU was able to hold off a Falcons rally until they evened the score with a goal in the 79
th minute. Five minutes later, Seattle Pacific took a 2-1 advantage on their final shot of the game. The ‘Lopes attempted two more shots before the clock ran out of time.
“As a team, we were in a little bit of culture shock because we got comfortable at home in our own backyard,” added Draksin. “We need to get better on the road. But again, congratulations to SPU. Now we have to move on to next game.”
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they open Pacific West Conference play at Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
