The Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team defeated Sonoma State, 2-1, tonight on the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix. With the win, the Antelopes improved to 2-0 on the season.
The ‘Lopes collected 16 shots for the game and were slightly outnumbered by Sonoma State who had 22 shots. GCU goalkeeper
Joshua Zehring had five saves for the game and improved his record to 2-0 in the net. Zehring had three saves in the second period to secure the win for GCU.
“Josh made some crucial saves tonight, but being an ex-goalkeeper, I know that is his job,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “Goalkeepers keep the team alive and can keep the team in the game. Every position has its role and in our sport, if the goalkeeper makes saves, the whole team has confidence.”
“The four defenders in front of the goalkeeper played very well and very hard,” added Draksin. “Sonoma State has some special offensive players and they are very offensive minded. They play a beautiful style of soccer that is offensive and very dangerous. Taylor Varnadore is an All-American and can punish you at any time if you are not watching him.”
Saeed Robinson scored both goals for the ‘Lopes, his first of the season. Robinson put GCU on the board with a goal in the 33
rd minute off an assist from
Yared Solscheid. The duo gave the ‘Lopes a two goal cushion when Solscheid again assisted Robinson on a goal in the 64
th minute.
The SeaWolves made it interesting when they scored their first goal of the game in the 84
th minute and took three more shots before the final buzzer sounded.
“This was a huge win for our team, especially with the schedule that we have put together,” Draksin said. “These were two good non-conference wins, but looking ahead, we will have some strong competition in the conference as well. Our conference is so strong and coupled with our non-conference schedule, we are taking it one game at a time and one win at a time. We are focusing on concentration, commitment to hard work and trying to get better each game. Sonoma State played a great game, everyone that watched this game was entertained. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Sonoma in the postseason. Our guys played their hearts out tonight. We are taking the day off tomorrow to rest our souls and bodies and we will come back to practice on Tuesday to focus on the next game.”
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they host top-ranked Fort Lewis on Friday at 8 p.m.
