The No. 8 Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team lost, 3-1, today at Notre Dame de Namur in their second Pacific West Conference matchup of the season. The Antelopes are now 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference, while the Argonauts improved to 5-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play.
“We came out flat today,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “We were still celebrating the win against Fresno Pacific. It was just a bad day overall. We had no emotion or energy. From the onset, we made a mistake and they punished us for it to go up 1-0 in the first half. As a team, we were not very good today.”
The Argonauts outshot the ‘Lopes, 17-9, including an 11-5 margin in the second half. GCU goalkeepers
Joshua Zehring and
Matt Malak combined for five saves in the contest.
Notre Dame de Namur got on the board in the 32
nd minute, the lone score of the half. The ‘Lopes took four shots in the first half, two of which were on goal but saved by Notre Dame de Namur goalkeeper Jay Tsuruoka.
The ‘Lopes opened the second half with a goal within the first eight minutes, as
Alberto Sanchez Garcia was assisted by
Chris Green to even the score. The goal was the second of the season for Sanchez Garcia.
The two teams remained tied for over 20 minutes until the Argonauts successfully converted two goals within five minutes of each other to secure the victory.
“Notre Dame is a very good team,” added Draksin. “It is still early in the season, but this is a sign of a very strong conference that we play in. Today, they were better than us and they deserved to win. We need put this one behind us and get ready for our next two games in Northern California.”
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they face PacWest newcomer Holy Names on Thursday at 1 p.m. in Oakland, Calif.
