The 10
th-ranked Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team defeated Pacific West Conference newcomer Holy Names, 2-1, today in Oakland, Calif. With the win, the Antelopes are now 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference. The Hawks fell to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.
The ‘Lopes held the advantage with 11 shots, with six of those on goal, compared to 10 and four for the Hawks, respectively.
“The team responded great after losing a tough game at Notre Dame de Namur on Monday,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “I am very proud of the boys. This conference has gotten so much better with the addition of Cal Baptist last year and the four schools this year (Fresno Pacific, Point Loma, Holy Names and Azusa Pacific). All of these schools have strengthened men’s soccer in this conference."
Holy Names had seven shots in the first half, two of which were on goal but saved by GCU goalkeeper
Joshua Zehring, who finished with three saves in the contest. The ‘Lopes attempted four shots in the first 45 minutes, placing two of those on goal.
Zoran Nincevic put the ‘Lopes on the board with an unassisted goal in the 17
th minute, his second score of the season. GCU was able to successfully convert on just their second shot attempt of the half.
The two teams traded shots for the remainder of the first half until the Hawks came on strong in the final seven minutes, attempting four shots but were unable to convert.
The second half saw the ‘Lopes attempt four shots within the first 15 minutes before Nincevic once again placed the ball in the back of the net to cushion GCU’s lead with just under 18 minutes to play.
“Zoran scored two gorgeous goals today,” said Draksin. “We had other chances to score, but so did Holy Names.”
GCU’s defense did not allow a shot in the second half by Holy Names until there were just under 10 minutes remaining on the clock. The ‘Lopes would allow just three shots by the Hawks in the half.
“The standouts from today’s game were Zoran and
Alberto Sanchez Garcia, who stepped in and had a very strong game,” added Draksin. “He is very dangerous offensively.
Yared Solscheid had a very, very good game. And Josh made a crucial save in goal to hold our lead in the last minute.”
Holy Names broke up the shutout when they scored on a penalty kick in the 85
th minute.
"Overall, I knew this trip wasn’t going to be easy, but we are putting it together,” Draksin said. “It is still early so we are battling some inconsistency, but hopefully that will come together. We will get ready now for our game at Academy of Art, a team that has greatly improved. Their coaching staff has done a great job.”
The ‘Lopes will conclude their Northern California road trip with a match at Academy of Art on Saturday at noon.
