The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams opened their 2012-13 campaign with their annual trip to San Diego for the 82nd La Jolla Rough Water Swim this past weekend.

“This trip was more about team building and laying a foundation for the upcoming season than competition,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “It was good to see so many of the kids start the season aggressively.”

The men had an impressive day in the open water swim, capturing eight medals and placing in all three age divisions that they competed. Incoming freshmen, Adam Kastiger (21.43), John Feely (21.46) and David Gauvin (22:10), posted the three fastest times for the men. They finished second, third and sixth, respectively, in the Amateur Division.

Buddy Turner finished second in the 19-24 age group, posting a 22:21. Teammate and newcomer, Luke Phillips, was third with a 22:23.

The women had three medalists and were led by Dora Plestina and Samantha Magnani. Plestina was third and Magnani fourth, both posting a 23:43 in the 19 and older event. Inha Kotsur placed first in the 25-29 age competition with a 24:17.

The Antelopes will officially open their season on Oct. 12 and 13, when they travel to the PCSC Pentathalon and Relay Meet in La Mirada, Calif.
