The Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team opened their 2012 slate with a 2-0 win over Colorado State University-Pueblo tonight in Phoenix. The game marked the season-opener for both squads.
The Antelopes had 22 shots for the game to outduel the ThunderWolves, who had two shots. GCU goalkeeper
Joshua Zehring had one save while playing the entirety of the game.
“I will take a win, although I don’ t think our performance was at its highest peak,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “But we had a great crowd here tonight. We didn’t perform as well as we would have liked in the first half, but we got more organized in the second half. That being said, I can’t take anything away from Pueblo, I knew it was going to be a tough game. Those kids work hard and they are very organized. However, our concentration and focus was lost in moments.”
The ‘Lopes came out firing in the first half, taking five shots before 10 minutes had expired off the clock. Following the first 45 minutes of play, the teams were locked in a scoreless tie, although the ‘Lopes had taken 13 shots. Seven of GCU’s shots were on goal as CSU-Pueblo goalkeeper Patrick Markis recorded seven saves in the half.
GCU came out and scored the first goal of the game with just under eight minutes into the second half as
Brian Green was assisted by
Oshane Brown. The ‘Lopes collected their second goal on a mishap by the ThunderWolves, who were charged with an own goal in the 75
th minute of play.
Green and
Saeed Robinson each had four shots apiece, with Green leading the way with three shots on goal. Brown had two shots on goal in three attempts.
“We were very inconsistent at times,” said Draksin. “Everyone had moments, both good and bad tonight. We did what we needed to do as a unit and we won the game.”
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they face off against Sonoma State at 8:30 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field on Sunday.
“We have tomorrow to prepare for another big game on Sunday against Sonoma State, a heavyweight in the West Region,” Draksin added. “It is going to be a great game and I am expecting a much better performance.”
