Karvonen Earns High Marks at Finnish Championships

Grand Canyon University’s Eetu Karvonen won the 100 breaststroke with a lifetime best of 58.44 yesterday at the Finnish SCM National Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Karvonen’s swim qualified him for the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey from Dec. 12-16. According to SwimSwam.com, his time is tied for the world’s best early in the 2012-13 season.
Karvonen, who will be a senior at GCU next season, is slated to swim in the 50 and 200 breaststroke events also during the competition.
“I am thrilled for Eetu, he has been working very hard to earn the opportunity to compete at the World Championships and he has finally realized that goal,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “I am sure he will do a great job in representing both Finland and GCU in Istanbul in December. His time would have ranked him 18th in the world in 2011, so it will be exciting to see how he places at the meet.”
In just his first season with the Antelopes in 2011-12, Karvonen won the NCAA Division II National Championship in both the 100 and 200 breast, setting a new national record in the latter with a time of 1:56.11.
