The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams are both sitting third after day one of the NCAA Division II Championships at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium in Mansfield, Tex.
Michael Branning (20.00) and
Buddy Turner (20.07) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 50 free (pictured on front page).
Ivan Nechunaev won the 200 IM consolation final (1:48.48), finishing ninth overall. The 200 medley relay team of
Kyle Shores,
Eetu Karvonen, Nechunaev and Branning had mixed results this evening. The guys missed out on the championship finals, but won the consolation finals with a 1:28.10. Their consolation time would have claimed the top spot in the championship race.
For the women,
Inha Kotsur took home sixth place in the 1000 free with a 10:08.77.
Catherine Polito also recorded a sixth-place finish, posting a 23.40 in the 50 free. The 200 medley relay team of
Stacey Wymer,
Aime Osterberg,
Mychala Lynch and
Stacey Rudman finished fourth (1:43.85) to close out the night.
The championships continue tomorrow and will feature the 200 free relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free and 400 medley relay. Lynch holds the best time in D-II this season in the 100 fly, while
