The Grand Canyon University women’s golf team opens the spring season tomorrow, February 6 at the Point Loma Nazarene University Super San Diego Championship in San Diego, Calif. at the Riverwalk Golf Club.
The women are coming off a successful fall season, slating five top-three finishes, including two team tournament titles. GCU will start the spring season ranked eighth in the nation according to the Golfstat NCAA Division II Head-to-Head rankings.
“It’s interesting because I didn’t feel like our girls played to their full potential but still did so well as a team,” said head coach Don Powers. “I’m definitely optimistic coming into the spring because we continue to get better.”
Golfstat also highlights freshman Charlotte Jaengkit as the fourth-ranked women’s golfer in Division II with a 73.07 scoring average. Sophomore Tiffany Hewetson and senior Brittany Penny appear in the top-50, ranking 24th and 31st respectively.
The Antelopes won their first tournament of the year with a 35-over par 611 at Arizona Christian University’s Fall Kickoff. Freshman Jaengkit was the individual tournament medalist after carding a three-over par 147. The team’s second tournament win came in Waikoloa, Hawai’i at the Dennis Rose Invitational with an 878 total. Jaengkit led GCU again with a second-place finish, shooting an even-par 210.
The 22-team Super San Diego Championship will feature top Division II teams such as No.6 Sonoma State and No.16 Dallas Baptist according to the latest National Golf Caches Association Top-25 Poll. The ‘Lopes were selected seventh in the preseason poll.
Tournament play will begin with an 11:30 a.m. (Pacific Time) shotgun start on Monday at the Riverwalk Golf Club.
