The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s track teams today completed the first day of action at the New Mexico Classic, hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
The meet consists of teams from New Mexico, Southern Utah, Air Force, UNLV, Kansas State and CSU-Pueblo, as well as several unattached athletes.
The Antelopes collected six top-five finishes on the first day of action, including three NCAA automatic qualifiers and two provisional marks.
Ann-Marie Duffus won the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.10 meters (20 feet, one-fourth inches), which reached an automatic qualifier. Her jump remained as the second-longest in the nation.
Shavine Hodges finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.06, the fastest among collegiate athletes in the competition. Her time reached an automatic mark and is the fastest in the fastest in Division II.
Vince Frawley took sixth in the pole vault with 5.10 meters (16 feet, 8 and three-fourths inches), an automatic qualifier and the third-best in the nation. He finished third among collegiate competitors in the event.
AAron Hill finished second in the long jump with a leap of 7.38 meters (24 feet, 2 and a half inches), which was the best among collegiate competitors in the event and reached a provisional mark.
Karlin Stewart finished just behind Hill with 7.31 meters, the fifth-longest jump in the nation and also a provisional qualifier.
Dominique Hubert took third in the 200-meter dash and first among collegiate competitors with a time of 21.84, which was just .01 seconds off the provisional mark.
Mikio Bain finished fifth with a time of 21.89, which was the third-best among collegiate competitors.
Including today’s marks, the ‘Lopes have already accumulated 13 NCAA automatic qualifiers, as well as 55 NCAA provisional marks. Among those with automatic marks are: Shavine Hodges in the 60-meter dash; Brianne Kee in the long jump; Ann-Marie Duffus in the long jump; Amber Yingling in the triple jump; Tyler Sipes in the 60-meter hurdles; AAron Hill in the long jump; Vince Frawley in the pole vault and Dominique Hubert in the 60-meter dash.
The meet concludes tomorrow with events starting at 9 a.m.
