The 17
th-ranked Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team defeated BYU-Hawaii, 3-2, tonight in overtime on the GCU Soccer Field. With the win, the Antelopes are now 9-2-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the Pacific West Conference, while the SeaSiders fell to 2-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.
The win was also the fifth straight for GCU and their sixth consecutive in Phoenix as they are undefeated on their home field.
“A win is a win,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “I am not happy that we allowed so many goals, but we are going to work on that. We will take this win and put it behind us as we prepare for our games next week.”
The ‘Lopes got on the board first with a goal from
Alberto Sanchez Garcia on a long assist from
Yared Solscheid in the second minute of the game. Just 13 seconds later, the SeaSiders responded with a goal of their own to notch the score at one. GCU took a 2-1 advantage with a goal from
Saeed Robinson off a
Chris Green assist in the seventh minute as the offense for both squads was quick to score in the first half.
“Saeed and Alberto had very good games,” Draksin said. “There were some players that had some great situational plays as well and played their hearts out.
Brandon Hansen was very solid again, and Yared did a great job. But we need to have 11 guys consistently playing hard day in and day out.”
GCU outshot BYU-Hawaii, 15-4, in the first 45 minutes as the ‘Lopes defense did not allow a shot by the Seasiders in the final 20 minutes of the first half. GCU placed six of their shots on goal as SeaSider goalkeeper Tyler Smedley had four saves.
The second half saw both teams on the defense, although the ‘Lopes once again outshot the SeaSiders by a margin of 11-2. However, BYU-Hawaii found the back of the net with just under three minutes in the half to tie the score at two and force extra minutes.
“In the game of soccer, you have to score the third goal,” Draksin added. “We didn’t do that. We scored the first goal, but then gave up one right away. The next five minutes after a goal scored is the most dangerous. We have to take care of business on our end. We have been inconsistent with that, especially to advance this season.”
In the first overtime period, it took Robinson less than two minutes to give the ‘Lopes their fifth straight win with his second goal on an assist from
Oshane Brown.
“Heading into overtime, I told the guys that we needed to play like we are a top-20 team in the country,” said Draksin. “One game can take away everything you have worked for throughout the season.”
GCU will continue their homestand next week with games against Hawai’i Pacific on Tuesday and Dominican on Saturday. Both games are slated to begin at 5:45 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field.
