The No. 15 Grand Canyon University men’s soccer team defeated visiting Hawai’i Pacific, 1-0, tonight at GCU Soccer Field. With the win, the ‘Lopes improved to 10-2-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Sea Warriors fell to 5-5-0 overall and 5-2-0 in conference play.
The win was the sixth straight for GCU, their longest since an eight-game streak from Sept. 6-Oct. 4, 2010. The ‘Lopes also improved their home record to 7-0 on the season.
“HPU played a great game tonight,” said head coach Petar Draksin. “They were very intelligent with what they were trying to do. They had a nice game plan. HPU is a very good team and these games have always been close. We came together and we scored an unbelievable goal in the final minutes. Nothing to take away from HPU, the games between us have always been classic games. HPU fought and they never gave up tonight. It was a great game.”
GCU outshot the Sea Warriors, 17-10, and placed six shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Joshua Zehring recorded saves on the two shots on goal by Hawai’i Pacific.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half as they combined for just 11 shots in the first 45 minutes. The ‘Lopes held the advantage, with seven shots compared to four for the SeaWarriors.
The ‘Lopes had 10 shots in the second half, while the Sea Warriors collected six.
The game looked like it was headed for overtime until
Saeed Robinson found the back of the net with just over one minute remaining.
Brandon Hansen provided the assist to an open net.
“We are 7-0 at home, but I believe that our standard of play has to pick up,” said Draksin. “There is a strong team in Dominican coming here on Saturday and it won’t be an easy game. We have to play strong here at the end.”
The ‘Lopes will wrap up their long homestand when they welcome Dominican (CA) on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field.
