The Grand Canyon University women’s swimming team fell, 152-110, in a dual meet to Division I Northern Arizona today at the Brophy Sports Complex in Phoenix.
“Our women raced very well against a very well prepared D-I team,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “This was our last meet before the RMAC championships and it was great preparation for that meet. We are still learning how to win the tough meets, but I think we are making very good progress.”
Mychala Lynch and
Inha Kotsur led the ‘Lopes, posting two wins each. Lynch won the 50 free with a 24.08. She won the 100 fly, outdistancing the field with a 55.96. Kotsur took first in the 1000 free, clocking in at 10:16.10. She won the tightly contested 500 free with a time of 5:03.25. Lynch led the ladies with 21.75 points.
The men were in action today as well, competing in an intra-squad meet.
“We had some very impressive in-season swims from our men and we are looking very good going into our championship season,” said Schaffer.
Ivan Nechunaev highlighted the men’s meet, setting a new team record in the 1000 free with a 9:53.77. Nechunaev also won the 100 fly (50.46).
Buddy Turner,
Eetu Karvonen and
Everton Kida were all double winners for the men.
The swim teams are now off until the RMAC Championships which will run from Feb. 15-18 in San Antonio, Tex. The NCAA Championships will be held in Mansfield, Tex. from March 14-17.
