The Grand Canyon University men’s track and field team moved up to No. 2, while the women are ranked No. 8 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Indoor National Team Rankings, as released today. The men’s team is making their first-ever appearance in the top three. In the preseason rankings for the USTFCCCA that were released last week, the men were ranked No. 5, while the women were No. 7.
GCU is one of just five universities with both the men’s and women’s programs ranked among the top eight teams.
Both the men’s and women’s squads are ranked No. 1 in the Western Region.
“For a program in only its second year of existence, it is quite an honor to be ranked second in the country,” said head coach Tom Flood. “While it’s nice to have our athletes hard work and my recruiting efforts recognized, we all will strive to continue to get better every day. Our team goal is to perform our best at the National meet, so we’re just getting started!”
According to the USTFCCCA, preseason data will be used along with current season data for rankings in week one and week two. The first release of the young season measured team returners that are likely to have a national impact, using last season’s final data, while also considering returning redshirts, team personnel changes and additional information provided by coaches and sports information directors.
“On the women’s side, this early in the season we haven’t doubled some athletes in certain events that they would be nationally ranked,” explained Flood. “While the National rankings are nice, my number one priority is keeping everyone healthy for when it matters most: at Nationals.”
Following two meets this season, the ‘Lopes have already accumulated six NCAA automatic qualifiers, as well as 35 NCAA provisional marks. Among those with automatic marks are:
Shavine Hodges in the 60-meter dash;
Brianne Kee in the long jump;
Ann-Marie Duffus in the long jump;
Tyler Sipes in the 60-meter hurdles;
AAron Hill in the long jump; and
Dominique Hubert in the 60-meter dash.
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they travel back to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the Mountain ‘T’s’ Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona University on Jan. 27-28.
