The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams, both ranked No. 3 in the CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Coaches poll, defeated Biola today in La Mirada, Calif.
The men won, 149-38, while the women cruised to a 136-64 win.
“This was a meet where we could let everyone swim some off events if they wanted to before we begin our last push to the conference and NCAA championships,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “I was very pleased with our performances today. We have been training very hard and our kids still stepped up and swam some very good times and they have showed that they are improving on their racing skills that will make the difference in our season ending meets.”
Ivan Nechunaev posted two first-place swims and a second-place finish to lead the ‘Lopes with a team high 22 points. Nechunaev set a new school record in the 1650 free, posting a winning time of 16:45.37. He won the 100 fly with a NCAA B cut standard of 50.80.
Eetu Karvonen had two wins for the men, posting a B cut in the 100 breast (55.50) and also taking the top spot in the 200 I.M. (1:57.48).
Buddy Turner set a B cut mark in the 50 free with a winning time of 20.97.
Tom Wahlers (4:56.01 in the 500 free),
Artem Tretiakov (47.81 in the 100 free) and
Robert Gonzales (53.94 in the 100 back) were the other winners for the GCU men.
Diana Volk scored 21 points to lead the women’s squad. Volk won the 500 free (5:15.91) and 100 free (1:56.33). She also had a third-place finish in the 100 breast (1:09.41).
Mychala Lynch took first in the 100 breast (1:08.15) and second in the 500 free (5:17.43) for 14 points.
Victoria Heron won the 100 free with a time of 55.13 and finished second in the 200 free (2:00.39) to match Lynch’s 14 points.
Catherine Polito was also a winner of the women’s side, taking first in the 50 free (25.10).
The women’s team returns to the pool on Jan. 28 for a highly anticipated dual with Division I Northern Arizona. The meet will be held at the Brophy Sports Complex in Phoenix and begins at 1 p.m.
