Junior forward
Saeed Robinson (Portmore, Jamaica, Wolmers Boys School, Western Texas College) scored a brace to lead the Grand Canyon University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over first-place Hawai'i Pacific University in a Pacific West Conference showdown today at Atherton Field in Kaneohe, Hawai'i.
It was the first PacWest loss of the season for Hawai'i Pacific (7-2-0 overall, 4-1-0 in the PacWest), which is ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 23 in the nation in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II poll.
GCU (5-2-1, 2-1-1) currently is ranked No. 5 in the West Region in the NSCAA vote.
Robinson, who scored in the 22nd and 34th minutes off of assists from senior midfielder
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Agua Fria, Phoenix College) and junior midfielder/defender
Alex Connally (Warrington, England, Culcheth, Erskine College), respectively, now has eight goals on the season. That ties him with HPU All-America senior forward Chance Bukoski for the conference lead and is the seventh-most goals nationally.
Bukoski, the reigning PacWest Men's Soccer Player of the Week who leads the conference in goals, goals per game (1.00), points (18), points per game (2.25), shots (32) and game-winning goals (3), and is tied for second in assists (2), had just one shot in today's match and it was not on frame.
The 'Lopes had advantages of 11-7 in shots, 7-2 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks.
Limiting HPU to just two shots on goal is quite a feat considering that through Sept. 25, the last time men's soccer stats were updated on the PacWest website, the Sea Warriors led the PacWest with 124 shots (15.50 per match) and 18 goals (2.25 per contest). Bukoski himself had taken 32 shots (4.00 per game).
Twenty-one fouls were called, 12 of which were on the Sea Warriors.
Three yellow cards and one red card were shown, all of them to HPU.
GCU senior goalkeeper
Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University) played the full 90 minutes, recorded two saves and posted his fifth win of the season.
HPU junior keeper Mael Lefebvre made five saves.
GCU will play the final match of its four-match trip to Hawai'i on Saturday, when it takes on Hawai'i Hilo (2-4-1, 1-2-0) at 6 p.m. Arizona time Amaaulu Field on the big island. If the 'Lopes win, they will come home having won three matches and tied one, last Saturday's 1-1 double-overtime draw with undefeated BYU-Hawai'i (5-0-1, 1-0-1) in Laie.
GCU's next home match is against Western Washington (3-4-0 overall, 2-2-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference) at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 6, at the GCU Soccer Field.
