Junior forward
Saeed Robinson (Portmore, Jamaica, Wolmers Boys School, Western Texas College) had a hat trick and two assists to lead the Grand Canyon University men's soccer team to an easy 9-0 win over Hawai'i Hilo in the Pacific West Conference matchup today at Amaaulu Field in Hilo, Hawai'i.
The Antelopes, ranked No. 5 in the West Region in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II poll, went unbeaten on their four-match trip to Hawai'i and are 6-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 in the PacWest. The Vulcans are 2-5-1, 1-3-0.
Robinson scored seven goals and had two assists for 16 points in Hawai'i. He now has 11 goals on the season, the most in the PacWest and one more than Hawai'i Pacific All-America senior forward Chance Bukoski, the conference scoring leader until Robinson surpassed him this week.
The national leader, senior forward Mark Anderson of Barry University, has 15 goals.
Senior midfielder
Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Agua Fria, Phoenix College), a 2010 Second-Team All-PacWest selection, got GCU on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal in the sixth minute. It was Garcia's second goal of the season and first since the season opener on Sept. 2. Both of his goals have been game-winners.
Just 27 seconds later, Robinson made the score 2-0 with an unassisted goal of his own.
In the 10th minute, junior midfielder
Alex Connally (Warrington, England, Culcheth, Erskine College) scored on a corner kick by Robinson to make the score 3-0. It was the first goal of the season for Connally, who scored one goal and had one assist last year at Erskine College, where he was a First-Team All-Conference Carolinas pick.
Senior midfielder
Cordero Young (Orlando, FL, Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College), a 2010 First-Team All-PacWest selection after tying for fourth in league in goals (8) and goals per game (0.44), scored his first goal and points of the 2011 season in the 26th minute. Robinson was credited with his second assist of the match on the play.
In the 34th minute, Robinson scored his second goal.
Senior midfielder
Tony Valera (Phoenix, AZ, Raymond S. Kellis, Phoenix College) scored his first goal of the season and first as a 'Lope in the 43rd minute off of an assist by senior midfielder
Miguel Benavides (Salem, OR, Sprague). It was the first assist of the season for Benavides, who had two assists last year and one in 2009.
Benavides scored the first goal of his GCU career in the 57th minute off of an assist by freshman forward
Anel Smajic (Zvornik, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Borah). It was Smajic's first point as a collegian.
Sophomore forward
Benjamin Hamlett (Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, Rosny College, Mountain State University), the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader in points (32), points per game (1.78) and game-winning goals per game (0.17) last year at Mountain State University, scored his first goal for the 'Lopes in the 79th minute. Benavides had the assist, his second of the match.
Robinson, who had 16 goals and eight assists last season and 13 goals and six assists the previous year at Western Texas College, closed the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 86th minute.
Senior goalkeeper
Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University), a transfer from Division-I Gardner Webb University, started for GCU. He recorded two saves and got his sixth win of the season.
He was replaced in the second half by redshirt freshman
Joshua Zehring (Gilbert, AZ, Hamilton), who made the first appearance of his college career. He, too, made two saves.
The 'Lopes had 16-10, 14-4 and 10-0 advantages in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks, respectively.
Thirteen fouls were called on each team.
GCU's next match is against Western Washington (4-4-0 overall, 3-2-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference), which scored twice in the last five minutes to defeat Saint Martin's University today in Bellingham, Wash., at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
