Senior midfielder Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Agua Fria, Phoenix College) and junior forward Saeed Robinson (Portmore, Jamaica, Wolmers Boys School, Western Texas College) scored second-half goals to lead the Grand Canyon University men's soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 16 in the nation in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II poll, to a 2-1 win over Western Washington University in a non-conference match tonight at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
The Antelopes, who are riding a five-match unbeaten streak and have won four Pacific West Conference championships in the five-year history of men's soccer in the conference, improved to 7-2-1 overall, 3-1-1 in the PacWest.
The Vikings, who had won three of their past four matches and were 3-1 on the road this season, fell to 4-5-0, 3-2-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The match was scoreless until the 56th minute, when Western Washington Honorable Mention All-America senior midfielder/forward Kellan Brown connected on a penalty kick after a GCU player was called for a hand ball in the 6-yard box on a free kick. It was the 24th goal of Brown's four-year career, and his team-leading fourth goal and 10th point this season.
Four minutes later, Garcia, a 2010 Second-Team All-PacWest selection, scored his third goal of the season and his second in as many games. Junior midfielder Lucas Mazier (Phoenix, AZ, Brophy College Preparatory, Regis University), whose shot rebounded back to Garcia, got the assist, the first point in his GCU career after having one assist last year and two goals in 2009 at Regis University in Denver. He is a product of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix.
Robinson scored the game-winner in the 67th minute after senior midfielder Cordero Young (Orlando, FL, Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) made a great upfield pass, Robinson took the ball away from a defender and kicked it high into the net. It was the 12th goal of the season and eighth in the past five matces for Robinson, who entering the game was tied for second in the nation in goals and tied for seventh in points (24).
It was the first assist of the season for Young, a a 2010 First-Team All-PacWest selection.
The 'Lopes had advantages of 15-5 in shots, 6-3 in shots on goal and 15-5 in corner kicks in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University) recorded two saves and got his seventh win of the year.
This was the 185th win in Head Coach Petar Draksin's career.
GCU now is 9-4-1 all-time vs. Western Washington.
