The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams were awarded Scholar All-America team awards for the 2010-11 season, as announced by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The men had a team GPA of 3.21 (fifth in Division II) and the women had a team GPA of 3.34 (ninth in Division II). To qualify for the team award, teams needed a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
“Our program is being built on the idea that we want great people who will excel in the classroom and the pool,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “This is the first year that both the men and women qualified for the team Scholar All-America awards and that is a big step forward for us. It is my hope that we will continue to earn the team recognition award every year as we move forward.”
GCU earned eight individual Scholar All-American Awards, five for the men and three for the women. The men’s award recipients were Michael Branning, Ralph Herberg, Ivan Nechunaev, Artem Tretiakov, and Charles Woodruff. Karlee Grundeis, Samantha Magnani, and Catherine Polito were named the women’s award winners. Individual Scholar All-America award swimmers must have competed at the NCAA Championships and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
“The individual awards show that our swimmers are getting the job done both in and out of the pool and I am very proud of them,” added Schaffer. “I hope we will continue to add to their numbers in the future.”
The GCU swim program had a banner 2010-11 season, with the men capturing fourth and the women finishing 10th at the NCAA Championships, both school record places. The teams combined to earn 33 All-Americans, 13 individual and 20 in the five contested relay events.
Schaffer was named the 2011 NCAA Division II Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Coach of the Year for his efforts during the season.
