The Grand Canyon University men’s swimming team was ranked first and the women 10th, in the recently released Avidasports Performance Rankings.
The Avidasports Performance Rankings are a unique measurement that factors in a team’s improvement through the course of the year along with the quality of the swimmers’ performances and team points scored at NCAA’s.
“The Avidasports rankings quantify a lot about what we emphasize in our program,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “Kids who come here are quality swimmers and we are able to help them continue to improve and move to higher and higher levels of performance. That’s really what it is all about. For our men to be ranked No. 1 and our women at No. 10 says that our coaches and swimmers are all getting the job done as a team.”
The GCU swim program had a banner season, with the men capturing fourth and the women finishing 10th at the NCAA Championships, both school record places. The teams combined to earn 33 All-Americans, 13 individual and 20 in the five contested relay events.
Schaffer was named the 2011 NCAA Division II Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Coach of the Year for his efforts this season.
