Senior midfielder
Cordero Young (Orlando, FL, Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) had a hat trick in the first half and junior forward
Saeed Robinson (Portmore, Jamaica, Wolmers Boys School, Western Texas College) added two goals and an assist to lead Grand Canyon University to a 6-1 victory over Academy of Art University in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match tonight at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
The Antelopes, who are ranked No. 4 in the West Region in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, improved to 10-3-1 overall, 6-1-1 in the PacWest. They have lost just once in their past nine matches. The Urban Knights, who were coming off a six-goal victory over Dominican that broke the school scoring record, fell to 4-8-0, 3-5-0.
This was the 188th career win in GCU Head Coach Petar Draksin's storied career.
Young now has four goals and three assists for 11 points this season. Last year, he was named Third-Team National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Performance Subaru NCAA Division II All-West Region and First-Team All-PacWest. He tied for fourth in the league in goals (8) and goals per game (0.44), and seventh in points (19) and points per game (1.06).
Robinson, who was a two-time All-Region V and All-West Region Second Team selection at Western Texas College before transferring to GCU, now has 16 goals, two fewer than national scoring leader Mark Anderson of Barry University. He also has 34 total points, seven less than pacesetter Zach Hofstetter of Florida Southern.
The 'Lopes' other goal was scored by junior defender
Stipe-Darko Medic (Brela, Croatia, Fra Andrije Kacica Miosica, Illinois Central College). It was the first goal and points of his GCU career.
Senior goalkeeper
Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University), who entering tonight's contest was ranked No. 8 in the nation in goals-against average (0.623) and No. 20 in save percentage (.826), improved his season record to 10-3-1. He was replaced in the 77th minute by redshirt freshman
Joshua Zehring (Gilbert, AZ, Hamilton), who made his second appearance ever for the 'Lopes. Neither of GCU's keepers made a save in the match.
GCU had 17-5 and 10-1 advantages in shots and shots on goal, respectively.
The 'Lopes' next game is on Saturday, when they again play Academy of Art at 2:30 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Field. They will wear pink wristbands in the game to promote breast cancer awareness, as they did tonight, and continue to wear them for the remainder of the month.
It also will be Senior Day, and at halftime the team's nine seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the men's soccer program and the university as a whole.
