The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team defeated Academy of Art University, 3-0, in a Pacific West Conference match today at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix. It is in second place in the conference standings, just a half-game behind Hawai'i Pacific.
The 'Lopes, who are ranked No. 4 in the West Region in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, have lost just once in their past 10 games and are 11-3-1 overall, 7-1-1 in the PacWest. Hawai'i Pacific is 12-4-0, 8-2-0.
Senior midfielder
Cordero Young (Orlando, FL, Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) is a big reason for GCU's success, particularly of late. He had a hat trick in Thursday's game against the Urban Knights (4-9-0, 3-6-0) and scored two more goals in today's game. The 2010 First-Team All-PacWest and Third-Team NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-West Region selection now has six goals and three assists for 15 points this season.
All five of the goals Young has scored in the past two matches, two of which have been game-winners, have come in the first half.
The 'Lopes' third goal in today's game was scored by freshman defender
Guido Riffeser (Wolkenstein, Italy, Franziskaner). It was one of the most spectacular goals of the season, an absolute rocket from the left side. It was the first goal and points of the season for Riffeser, who has played a total of 77 minutes in four matches.
Goalkeeper
Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University), one of nine seniors who were honored at halftime for their contributions to the men's soccer program, made one save and recorded his 11th win and fourth shutout of the season.
GCU had advantages of 23-2 and 9-1 in shots and shots on goal, respectively. They had eight corner kicks to the Urban Knights' two.
Head Coach Petar Draksin, who recorded his 189th career victory, started all nine seniors, and all of them played at least 53 minutes.
The 'Lopes have two critical matches against third-place California Baptist (10-4-0, 7-1-0) in the next nine days. They face the Lancers at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Riverside, Calif., and at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, at the GCU Soccer Field.
It should be a thrilling Halloween night.
HPU has an easier schedule from here on out. They take on last-place Chaminade (0-12-1, 0-8-0) next Saturday in Kaneohe, Hawai'i and fifth-place BYU-Hawai'i (7-5-1, 3-3-1) on Nov. 2 in Laie.
The Sea Warriors have 24 points, the 'Lopes 22, the Lancers 21, and fourth-place Dixie State (7-4-2, 6-1-0) has 18.
GCU's final game of the regular season is against the Red Storm on Nov. 3 in St. George, Utah.
