The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 16 in the nation in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, defeated Dominican University of California 3-0 in a Pacific West Conference match tonight at the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix.
The Antelopes, who have won four PacWest championships in the five-year history of men's soccer in the conference and advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Division II West Regional last season, improved to 8-3-1 overall, 4-1-1 in the PacWest.
The Penguins, playing without three starters, not counting senior midfielder Pedro Guevara, the 2011 PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, fell to 2-9-0, 1-5-0. Guevara has been banged up all season and has yet to play.

Mitchell Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Agua Fria, Phoenix College) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 13th minute. He blasted the ball from the left side, about 30 yards out. It was the fourth goal, 10th point and third game-winning goal of the season for the 2010 Second-Team All-PacWest pick.

Yared Solscheid (Eagle, ID, Eagle) made the score 2-0 in the 21st minute. Senior midfielder
Cordero Young (Orlando, FL, Central Florida Christian Academy, Tyler Junior College) passed the ball in to senior forward/midfielder
Bamoutaga Ballo (Babo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, Lycee Prive Bethanie I, Essex County College), who shot it. The ball rebounded back to Solscheid, who put it in the back of the net.
Junior midfielder
Alex Connally (Warrington, England, Culcheth, Erskine College), the newly-named co-captain of the team, scored the final goal of the match in the 86th minute off of an assist from senior midfielder
Miguel Benavides (Salem, OR, Sprague). Connally dribbled across the center of the field in the attacking third and shot the ball to the far post.
GCU started the game without one of its own key players, junior forward Saeed Robinson (Portmore, Jamaica, Wolmers Boys School, Western Texas College). The transfer from Western Texas College has an abdominal injury was not in the starting 11, but came in off the bench and had three shots, two of them on frame.
He leads the PacWest in goals (12), goals per game (1.09), points per game (2.36), shots (56) and shots per game (5.09); is tied for the lead in game-winning goals (4); and ranks second in points (26).
Senior goalkeeper Adam Garcia (Avondale, AZ, Westview, Phoenix College, Gardner-Webb University) made three saves and notched his fourth shutout of the season.
The 'Lopes had advantages of 17-6 in shots, 8-3 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks in the match.
Eleven fouls were called, six of which were on GCU.
Entering tonight's contest, the most striking difference between the 'Lopes and Penguins was on defense. GCU had the fewest goals allowed in the PacWest with seven, while Dominican was tied for the most with 23.
Offensively, the teams were very disparate as well. The 'Lopes were tied for first in goals per game (2.27), tied for second in goals (25), second in shots (194), third in points (63), fourth in assists (13) and fifth in assists per game (1.18). The Penguins were tied for seventh in assists (7), eighth in points (27), goals (10), goals per game (1.00) and assists per game (0.70), and ninth in shots (105).
GCU's next game is on Saturday, when it faces Notre Dame de Namur (6-5-0, 2-3-0) at 7:30 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Field. The Argonauts received one first-place vote in the PacWest preseason coaches' poll and were predicted to finish in third place in the conference this year.
