Grand Canyon University’s
Mychala Lynch was today named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Week, while
Charles Woodruff was named the RMAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week, after their performances this past week.
“Both are well deserved awards,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “Charlie is doing the best training and racing that he has done in his four years at GCU. He seems determined to make the most of his last year and I can’t wait to see him swim at the NCAAs in March. Mychala just continues to show how very talented she is. She just keeps winning, even through our hard Christmas break training. She is a very special swimmer and I feel fortunate to be coaching her.”
Lynch captured her third RMAC Swimmer of the Week award this season after winning five races over the weekend, including four individual events. In a dual against Alaska-Fairbanks and Mesa State on Friday, she won the 100 fly (57.60), 200 fly (2:13.93) and swam on the winning 400 free relay team. At UC-San Diego on Sunday, she won the 50 free (24.28) and the 100 fly (57.40).
Woodruff, the only member of the GCU swim team to have been with the program since its first year of competition, took home his first RMAC award this season. He led the ‘Lopes to a dual win over Mesa State on Friday with three wins in the 50 free (21.26), 100 free (47.45) and the 400 free relay.
This is the 11th and 12th weekly RMAC honor of the season for GCU.
The GCU swimming teams will return to the pool on Jan.15 at 1:30 p.m., where they will host Division I Stony Brook at the Dottie Boreyko/Brophy Sports Campus in Phoenix, Ariz.
