400 Relay team adds itself to list
CANTON, Ohio -- The Grand Canyon University 400 Freestyle Relay team of Charlie Woodruff (Phoenix, Ariz./Central), Johan Ivarsson (Sundsvall, Sweden/Sundsvall), Ralph Herberg (Potsdam, Germany/Sportschule Potsdam) and Artem Tretiakov (Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk National University) earned All-American honors in the final race of the NCAA Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
The quartet set a team-record time of 3:04.32 in the prelims to qualify for the final spot and followed it up with a time of 3:04.32 to place eighth.
It was the third All-America honors set by the team this week. Herberg earned a fifth place finish in the 100 Breaststroke and Tretiakov was eighth in the 50 Freestyle.
It was the first time the third-year men's program had sent swimmers to nationals. GCU scored 99 points and placed 16th. Six swimmers qualified for nationals including Ben Hewitt (Sandy, Ore./Corbett) and Richie Krzyzanowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle).
Herberg added points Saturday with a 13th place finish in the 200 Breaststroke (2:05.07) and Ivarsson won the 'B' final in the 200 Backstroke to take ninth overall and give the team nine points. He set a team-record with a time of 1:49.80. Tretiakov added a 10th in the 100 Freestyle (45.42). Woodruff was 24th (46.24).
