ARVADA, Colo. -- For the second straight night, GCU sophomore
Caitilin Hoffman (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert) defended her Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships crown and the 'Lopes added another title and NCAA qualifier on the final night of the event at Meyers Pool.
GCU finished third with 669.5 points. Incarnate Word had 896 and Minnesota State-Moorhead scored 768.5.
Third is the best finish in the program's three years in the RMAC.
Along with Hoffman, clocking in at 2:07.82 to win the 200 Backstroke, freshman
Riley Smith (Phoenix, Ariz./Christian) won the 200 Butterfly in 2:10.79 setting a new Antelopes' record. GCU added a third-place finish from
Cherie Przybyl (St. Charles, Ill./Bartlett/Wheaton College) and seventh-place performance from
Deanna Anderson (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian).
After the meet, in non-scoring national-qualifying time trials, senior
Alexis Glessner (Mesa, Ariz./Red Mountain/N. Colorado) became an NCAA qualifier in the 200 Freestyle (1:54.19). She will also participate in events that she had already earne "B" qualifying times.
Glessner and Hoffman have both qualified for the NCAAs. GCU has a time trial in Phoenix next week in hopes to add more to the contingent.
During the meet, Glessner,
Tori Heron (Glendale, Ariz/Sandra Day O'Connor),
Rhian Whitmarsh (Gilbert, Ariz./Higley/Chandler-Gilbert CC) and
Brooke Bellah (Phoenix, Ariz./Christian) finished second in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:34.79), breaking a school record.
Whitmarsh and Bellah finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 Freestyle. Heron added a fourth in the 1650 Freestyle (18:26.16) and
Julie Redaway (Braine L'Alleud, Belgium/Ste Gertrude Nivelles) was fifth in the 200 Breaststroke (2:29.19). Redaway's time was a new GCU record.
