ARVADA, Colo. --
Artem Tretiakov (Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk National University) became Grand Canyon's men's swim program's second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion, both in the 50 Freestyle, with a victory Thursday at Meyers Pool.
Tretiakov won the race in 20.85, just .01 away from matching his school record, set earlier this season. In fact, he ran the same time in the finals and preliminary races. In 2008,
Charles Woodruff (Phoenix, Ariz./Central) won the RMAC 50 Free. On Thursday, Woodruff added a solid fourth place finish.
GCU is third after the first day of the three-day competition.
GCU's 200 Freestyle relay team of
Matt Muchna (Prescott, Ariz./Home School), Woodruff,
Johan Ivarsson (Sundsvall, Sweden/Sundsvall) and Tretiakov placed second in 1:25.45.
GCU's 400 Medley Relay team was third and set a new Antelope record with a time of 3;26.62.
Muchna was fifth in the 200 IM with a GCU-record time of 1:58.04.
Freshman
Xavier Lopez (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) was sixth in the 500 Freestyle with a school-record time of 4:47.44.
The 15th-ranked 'Lopes scored 198 points. Second-ranked Incarnate Word has 342 and No. 12 Colorado School of Mines is second with 241.5.
