The Grand Canyon men’s and women’s swimming teams wrapped up their weekend in Riverside, Calif. in fine fashion today, eclipsing three school record swim times at the PCSC Pentathlon.
On the women’s side of ledger,
Mychala Lynch (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier College Prep , Texas Christian University) set a pair of new school records with a time of 26.42 in the 50 fly and 1:00.91 in the 100 individual medley. Her IM time shattered the old mark by over four seconds and led her to a second-place finish in the short medley pentathlon.
The women, who placed third on the day in the team competition, received a first, second and two third-place finishes from
Catherine Polito (Cottonwood, AZ, Mingus Union). She posted a winning time of 1:56.21 in the 200 free and finished second overall in the freestyle pentathlon.
Rashelle Klontz (Sandpoint, ID, Sandpoint), the first-ever diver for the GCU program, placed sixth in the 1-meter and 10
th in the 3-meter to finish eighth in the diving biathlon in her inaugural event for the ‘Lopes.
The men placed fourth on the day and were led by
Ivan Nechunaev (Tomsk, Russia , Tomsk National University), who had three first-place swims, including a new school record time of 1.54.33 in the 200 IM. Nechunaeu took home top honors in the long medley pentathlon.
Ralph Herberg (Potsdam, Germany, Sportschule Potsdam) took home second-place honors in the 50 breast with a time 27.65 and finished fourth in the short medley pentathlon. Teammates
Charles Woodruff (Phoenix, AZ, Central) and
Michael Branning (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
“It's very exciting to see such a large number of quality swims this early in the season,” said head coach Steve Schaffer. “It bodes very well for our December meet where we will make our first attempt at qualifying for the NCAA’s. Our newcomers really stepped up and gave notice that they are more than ready to help the returners move us up the ladder to top-10 team finishes at NCAA’s.”
For the second day in a row, Cal Baptist University won both the men’s and women’s meets.
The men’s and women’s teams will both be back in action on Oct. 23 at the University of Redlands Invitational in Redlands, Calif.
