LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Junior Artem Tretiakov (Donetsk, Ukraine/Donetsk National University) became the first GCU swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Championships Friday.
On the first day of the four-day Finis Collegiate Invitational, Tretiakov swam an NCAA 'A' Cut time of 45.34 in the 100 Freestyle, it was also a new team record.
Team scores were not tabulated Friday, but all times were official.
A number of other swimmers swam 'B' cuts and lifetime bests.
Head coach Steve Schaffer believes both men's and women's teams will have great opportunities to qualify for NCAAs during the remainder of the invitational.
Freshman Johan Ivarsson (pictured, Sundsvall, Sweden/Sundsvall) added a 'B' cut in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 46.83.
Freshman Paul Root (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott) swam a lifetime best of 2:22.14 in the 200 Breaststroke. Sophomore Ben Hewitt (Sandy, Ore./Corbett) and freshman Matt Muchna (Prescott, Ariz./Home School) swam lifetime bests in the 200 Butterfly with times of 1:58.81 and 2:00.01, respectively.
Freshman Richie Krzyzanowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Pinnacle) had a season's best time of 1:57.26 in the 200 Backstroke.
