RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Grand Canyon University's swim teams opened the 2008-09 season at the PCSC Relays at the California Baptist Lancer Aquatics Center Friday. The men placed sixth and the women finished ninth.
Highlighting the day's events was a new school record in the women's 400 Medley Relay. Nearly six seconds quicker than the mark set last season, Caitilin Hoffman, Maggie Rose, Cherie Przybyl and Brooke Bellah finished the race in 4:22.29.
The women scored six team points.
The men's best finish was a sixth in the 400 IM relay. Mike Smyers, Tyler Bhirdo, Keith Myers and Eddy Salcido (pictured) finished in 4:00.96 to earn an evening best nine points. GCU finished with 39 points. Cal Baptist won the men's portion with 238.
Three other relay teams placed seventh. Marque Hurd, Tony Borr, Smyers and Bhirdo wrapped up the 500 freestyle relay in 4:33.85. In the 400 medley, Smyers, Salcido, Myers and Bhirdo clocked in at 3;46.09. The 200 freestyle group of Bhirdo, Borr, Hurd and Salcido finished in 1:33.76.
The women's 1500 freestyle team of Caitilin Hoffman, Chrysta McMahon and Cherie Przybyl earned four points with a ninth place finish.
Both teams will compete again Saturday at the PCSC Pentathlon.
