LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The first day of the three-day UC-Irvine/Nike Cup saw Grand Canyon University swim teams set six school records at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool Thursday.
The men's team set new marks in the 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 400 medley relay. The women broke the record for the 200 freestyle relay.
Charlie Woodruff, Marque Hurd, Ben Hewitt and Eddy Salcido finished the 200 free relay in 1:29,14. Their 9th place finish was the best of the day.
Mike Smyers, Salcido, Woodruff and Tyler Bhirdo swam the 400 medley relay in 3:38.84 to finish 11th. Bhirdo set a new record in the 500 freestyle prelims with a time of 4:50.64. Smyers broke the school 200 IM time with a 2:03.6. Swimming unattached Tomek Ciecierega broke the school mark in 50 freestyle by finishing in :21.61.
The women's team scored all 14 points with an 18th-place record swim in the 200 freestyle relay. Brooke Bellah (pictured), Caiti Hoffman, Maggie Rose and Cherie Przybyl swam a 1:45.39.
The men finished with 72 points, scoring 40 in 200 freestyle relay and 32 in the 400 medley relay. UNLV leads the event with 351.5 points. BYU, with 351.5, leads the women's competition.
There are 22 women's teams and 15 men's teams competing in the event that last through Saturday. Twenty of the teams are from Division I.
