With over six weeks since the last meet, the Grand Canyon University swim teams will look to knock off a little rust this weekend with three contests in California.
The squads had their best performances of the season Nov. 20-22 at the NIKE Cup in Long Beach and are hopeful the holiday rest and quality practice time will show beginning Friday against Biola University. The team competes at the Cal Baptist University Inviational Saturday and at UC San Diego Sunday.
"We want to see where we're at in terms of racing again," said coach Steve Schaffer.
Along with those returning from last semester, the Antelopes are pleased to have freshman sprinter Tomasz Ciecierega (pictured) eligible for the second semester. Swimming unattached at the Long Beach meet, Ciecierega set new school marks in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
Though a few injuries could hurt the weekend's team scores, Schaffer believes those able to swim can be successful against solid competition.
"We'll put some people in some events they haven't had an opportunity to do yet as we start to narrow down what their choices will be for what they'll swim at conference," said Schaffer.
This weekend will be the final preparation, as far as competitive meets go, until the conference meet. GCU will swim in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio, Tex. Feb. 19-21.
