Daniel Cherbonnier enters his first season on the GCU men’s soccer staff in 2020-21. Cherbonnier joins the Lopes as an assistant coach after serving eight seasons at Tulsa and six at the University of Texas at Tyler.
Cherbonnier was a part of the Tulsa men’s soccer coaching staff for eight seasons, starting as a volunteer assistant in 2013 before moving to a graduate position. He was named an assistant coach in 2017. In his seven seasons with the program, he helped Tulsa to a 60-49-23 record, three American Athletic Conference championships and three NCAA appearances.
The teams he coached at Tulsa earned multiple United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards, as well as earning the Medicine Wheel Outstanding Community Service Award.
On an individual level, Cherbonnier coach 20 all-conference performers, 27 player of the week honorees, 18 all-tournament team selections, 10 All-Rookie team honorees and 96 academic all-conference selections.
Prior to Tulsa, Cherbonnier spent six seasons at the University of Texas at Tyler as an assistant coach. There his teams compiled a 72-29-14 record, won three regular season titles and three American Southwest Conference tournament titles.
He helped coach three All-American selections, nine all-region honorees and 38 all-conference performers. His teams also earned multiple NSCAA Team Academic awards and had 52 academic all-conference winners. Cherbonnier helped the team to its best finish in program history in 2011 when they made it to the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 and finished ranked seventh in the nation.
Cherbonnier has his bachelor’s in psychology with a minor in Kinesiology, as well as a master's in education. He has earned the United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma, a USSF “C” License and his United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma, as well as completin the La Liga Methodology Level 1 Course and earning the Coerver Coaching Level 1 Certificate.
He has also spent time coaching on the high school and club level at Bishop Gorman High School, All-Saints Episcopal High School, Tulsa Soccer Club, Azurri Soccer Club and the Tyler Soccer Association.
