Alex Rangel returned to the GCU men’s soccer staff in February of 2023 and begins his second season as goalkeepers coach for the upcoming 2023 season.
Rangel was the goalkeepers coach during the 2021 season at GCU, helping the Lopes to a 15-4-1 record and its second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Rangel returns to the Lopes staff after serving as assistant coach/goalkeepers coach and director of operations at Oregon State in 2022. The Beavers finished fourth in the Pac-12 in saves per game (2.47) and fifth in save percentage (.667) as well as earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
At GCU in 2021, Rangel coached Anthony Muñoz to a 10-3-1 record as a starter with 49 saves, two shutouts and a .778 save percentage and Rafael Guerrero to a 5-1 record with 30 saves, three shutouts and a .857 save percentage. As a team, GCU finished fourth in the nation in save percentage (.808) and third in the WAC in saves per game (4.0).
Prior to GCU, Rangel worked with Real Salt Lake Academy in Arizona, setting the vision for youth goalkeeper development within the academy with emphasis on technical, vision, communication, and leadership. He also was the goalkeepers coach for FC Tucson for six years (2016-21), winning the 2016 and 2017 conference championship, and goalkeepers coach for Pima CC for six years (2016-21), capturing three District championship, three regional championships and a National Championship in 2018.
Rangel also worked with FC Tucson Youth Academy from 2013-20 and has been the owner/president of Top Hand Goalkeeping since 2015.
Rangel earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration at Columbia College (Mo.) in 2011.
