GCU comes off record-setting 7-2 victory over Oakland
AT A GLANCE
- Coming off a 7-2 win against Oakland in front of 2,300 fans at GCU Stadium, Grand Canyon continues its homestand Monday and hosts Houston Christian for Faith and Family Night.
- GCU's offense found its rhythm from the get-go Thursday night, scoring two goals within the first five minutes en route to a 7-2 victory. The seven goals were the most GCU has scored against a Division I opponent.Â
- Lopes freshman forward Arnau Camaño tallied a brace, the first for GCU this season. Camaño was one of six goal scorers on the night with 19 points totaled among all Lopes.Â
- GCU's 23 shots against UC Riverside were the most in a single game against a D-I opponent, but that record was broken Thursday vs. Oakland with 25 shots (15 on goal). The Lopes have 48 shots and 20 shots on goal over their last two matches.
- Subsequentially, the defense has held the opposition to 11 shots over the last two games, with the six against UC Riverside and five against Oakland being the two lowest tallies this season.
- The Lopes hold a 55-25-8 record at GCU Stadium since it opened in 2016. Thirty of those victories have come over the past five seasons, including nine in 2025.Â
- Freshman forward Alhassan Alhassan scored his first collegiate goal against the Golden Grizzlies and is the Mountain West leader in shots (14).
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU earned its first home victory of the season last Thursday with a 7-2 defeat over Oakland in front of 2,300 fans at Welcome Week.
- Six Lopes scored, with the seven goals and 25 shots being the most against any team in the program's D-I era.
- Nineteen points were tallied by the Lopes offense. The win was the first for GCU head coach Jamie Davies at home this season.
SCOUTING HOUSTON CHRISTIAN
- The Huskies are 1-3-1 entering Phoenix, their third stop in a week's span after drawing 2-2 at CSU Northridge on Friday night.
- Houston Christian entered that match with one goal on the season. Callum Niven tallied a brace and has five shots this season.
- Harvey Heeps has 20 saves in five games, averaging four per game in net for the Huskies.
- The match is the third straight on the road for Houston Christian, which faced No. 5 SMU to begin the trip. This is the first meeting between the programs since 2023, with GCU holding a 9-2 record all time.
