The Grand Canyon women's tennis team went 2-0 this weekend against Mountain West opponent, taking down San José State 5-0 and Fresno State 4-1 at GCU Tennis Facility.
"It was a great open to conference play to start with two solid wins at home," Lopes head coach Dané Vorster said. "We are very proud of this team's commitment and discipline every day and are excited to see how far we go."
GCU 5, San José State 0
The Lopes started off doubles play Friday with a comeback win on Court 2 and dominance on Court 1.

Bella Crossman took over on Court 1, winning 6-2 to get the dual match started well for the Lopes. This win brought the duo to 6-4 on the season and 4-1 on Court 1.

On Court 2, GCU ground out a comeback win to secure the doubles point. After being down 4-1, freshman
Hams Metwally and junior
Gala Arangio took down the Spartans 6-4.

In singles play, Metwally started the scoring for the Lopes with a 6-3, 6-0 win.

On Court 4, Deaifi defeated Tara Mihaljevic 6-4, 6-2 before freshman Amalia Suciu clinched the dual match for the Lopes with a 7-5, 6-2 victory on Court 5.

Finishing at almost exactly the same time as Suciu, Arangio defeated Emma Fantousis in a battle, winning 6-4 in both sets.

The rest of the matches were abandoned.
GCU 4, Fresno State 1
GCU started its Sunday match against Fresno State with a quick showing in doubles play, losing only one game. The duo of Deaifi and Crossman swept the Bulldogs duo 6-0 while Arangio and Metwally won 6-1 on Court 2.

The doubles point was won by the Lopes in less than 20 minutes.

In singles, Metwally showed why she leads GCU in wins, defeating Paulina Montiel 6-2, 6-3 to bring her win streak to seven matches with her last loss coming against a ranked opponent.

Suciu won the first set 6-2 on Court 5 before an unreal comeback in the second set. After trailing 4-0 in the second set, she rallied to win 6-4 and push the Lopes lead to 3-0.

With Fresno State picking up a Court 6 win against Duckett, the veteran Deaifi was able to will the Lopes to a dual victory.

Playing on Court 4, Deaifi battled, winning 7-5 in the first set before breaking through 6-3 in the second set, clinching the match for GCU.

"This team has so much trust in each other," Deaifi said. "I know that whoever is playing will give their all no matter the score."

The Lopes go on another road trip this week, when they visit Mountain West foes Boise State and Utah State before heading home for two more conference dual matches.
