The GCU Women's Tennis team went on their first in conference trip this weekend as they took on Boise State and Utah State.
The Lopes were swept by the former Mountain West Champions Boise State before they were able to rally and come up with a 4-1 victory in Logan, Utah.
Boise State defeats GCU 4-0
The first stop of the road trip was Boise, Idaho for the Lopes on Friday to take on the Broncos. Despite a hard fought match, including a tiebreaker in doubles play, the Lopes ultimately suffered their first conference loss.
Over on Court 3 in doubles play the freshman duo of
Hams Metwally and Amalia Suciu were able to pick up the win 6-4. Boise State went on to take the doubles point on Courts 1 and 2.
Singles play started with Masa Viriant taking the point over Metwally defeating her 6-1, 6-2.
The Broncos clinched the match with a pair of wins on Court 1 and 4 over sophomore's
Bella Crossman and
Gala Arangio.
GCU defeats Utah State 4-1
The Lopes were able to turn it around with a 4-1 win against the Aggies on Sunday evening.
Doubles play started with the Aggies taking Court 1. Arangio and sophomore
Karina Hofbauer took the win 6-3.
With the Lopes needing one more win to clinch the doubles point, sophomore
Peyton Duckett and Suciu responded. After a close match the duo won 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker).
Over in singles play GCU had a dominant showing. On Court 6 Duckett got the scoring started for the Lopes taking out Olivia Halvorsen. The Aggies then battled back with Hofbauer dropping to Sabrina Pintea 6-1, 6-3.
With the match at 2-1 GCU was looking for the next point to separate themselves. Arangio answered on Court 3 as she was able to pick up a victory 6-2, 6-4.
After losing the first set 6-3, Crossman was able to come back and win the next two sets 6-2, 6-4. With this win the Lopes clinched the match and Crossman picked up her sixth win of the season.
The Lopes return back home this week as they take on Air Force on Friday and a strong New Mexico team on Sunday.
