Lopes brings GCU Stadium 4-1 record to nonconference match

Heading back home for the first time since Sept. 8, Grand Canyon hosts undefeated CSUN (5-0-3) on Friday nigh at GCU Stadium.
CSUN has given up only one goal in eight matches. Its team goals against average of 0.13Â is second best in the nation.Â
The Lopes have a goal differential of plus-6 and have yet to allow more than one goal in a contest this season. They hold a goals against average of 0.86, third best in the WAC, and are outscoring opponents 11-4 at home.
GCU freshman forward Junior Diouf scored his sixth goal of the season at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, putting him in the top 15 nationally in goals and points (14). Diouf also ranks in the top 15 in shots on goal per game (1.83), shots per game (3.83)Â and points per game (2.33).
GCU is third in the conference with 12 assists, led by graduate forward Ben Assane, who is second in the WAC and 22nd nationally with four. All of Assane's assists have gone to Diouf. The team is averaging 1.71 assists per game, third best in the WAC.
Graduate goalkeeper Daniel Ibarra has 13 saves over his last two games and has moved his season mark to 21 in four GCU starts this season. Ibarra's season high of seven saves vs. UC Santa Barbara is tied for second most among WAC goalies this season.
With plenty of shots comes plenty of corner kicks, and the Lopes are third in the conference with 5.4Â corner kicks per game. GCU has totaled five or more corners in four games this season.
The Lopes offense continues to attack the net with 13.9 shots per game, the third-highest average in the league. GCU has recorded double-digit shot totals in seven straight games and, with 97 total, are more than halfway toward its 2024 total of 167.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lopes drew 1-1 with UC Santa Barbara on Sunday in their second road match of the season.Â
Diouf scored his sixth goal while Ibarra recorded a season-high seven saves.
The match included 29 shots, 13 shots on goal, 14 corner kicks and 25 fouls. Nineteen of the 29 shots came in the first half.Â
SCOUTING CSUN
The Matadors boast one of the nation's best defenses this season. In eight matches, they have allowed only one goal with seven shutouts.Â
CSUN goalkeeper Dorian Drucks ranks among the best in the country, holding a .974 save percentage and an average of 0.14Â goals allowed per match. Both rank second in the nation.Â
The Matadors have scored seven goals on the season with six scorers.Â
CSUN's RPI is 71 as of Wednesday, with GCU at 97. The RPI rankings were first released Monday.

The Lopes stay home and host UT Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday at 7 p.m.Â
The match against the Vaqueros is GCU's final nonconference match of the season before hosing (RV) Utah Valley on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the WAC opener.
