The Grand Canyon women's tennis team concluded its regular-season schedule with a pair of matches in Northern California this weekend.
On Friday, the Lopes dropped a tightly contested match at Saint Mary's 4-3 before falling to Sacramento State 4-0 on Saturday.
GCU turns its attention to the WAC Tournament, which begins in Arlington, Texas, on Thursday. With no regular-season play conducted by the WAC this season, the upcoming tournament will be seeded based on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. GCU entered the week leading the conference and will wait to see if it held the No. 1 position following the weekend's results.
Final court's final set decides Friday match
GCU dropped a narrow 4–3 decision to Saint Mary's on Friday at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex despite strong singles performances from the Lopes' top players.
The match came down to a third set on the final court to break a 3-3 tie between the Lopes and the Gaels.
On the fourth court, GCU juniorÂ
Dania Deaifi posted a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 win to pull the match even at 3-3.
Lopes freshmanÂ
Angelina Mihajlovic fought to a third set on Court 5 and took a 3-1 lead in the set but ran out of gas as the Gaels claimed the fourth point.
After falling behind 1-0 following doubles losses at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, GCU battled back in singles with straight-set wins from sophomore
Gala Arangio and freshman
Karina Hofbauer. Arangio earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Iman Khan at No. 2, while Hofbauer handled Juliette Daries 6-0, 7-5 on the top court.
Saint Mary's sealed the team win with tight three-set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions, where Mihajlovic and freshmanÂ
Peyton Duckett each fell after taking the opening set.
Lopes fall in regular-season finale
GCU ran into a red-hot Sacramento State team in Saturday's regular-season finale, falling to the 75th-ranked Hornets 4-0 in Sacramento.
Sacramento State improved to 17-3 with 10 wins in its last 11 matches.
The Hornets struck early by clinching the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
In singles play, GCU (11-10) pushed several matches to third sets, but Sacramento State sealed the victory with wins at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 courts. Arangio battled back to force a third set at No. 2 before falling 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, while Deaifi and Duckett each dropped straight-set decisions.
Several matches remained unfinished when the Hornets clinched the dual, including tight battles from Hofbauer at No. 1 and Crossman at No. 3, both of whom had split sets before play was halted.
The Lopes return home to prepare for the upcoming WAC Tournament.
