Grand Canyon returned home and felt at home after Day 1 of the GCU Invitational on Tuesday, recording a team score of 7 under par to take a six-stroke lead heading into Wednesday's final round.
Round two was halted for select teams due to darkness, with second-round action resuming Wednesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start for all teams.
The Lopes lead New Mexico State (1 under) by six strokes, followed by Pacific in third at 2 over.
GCU graduate
Tommaso Zorzetto, who took home the individual medal last year at GCU Golf Course, is tied for first at 4 under, recording nine birdies through two rounds with a 1-under second round. Zorzetto is tied with Tegan Andrews of CSU Fullerton and is one of four Lopes in the top 10.
Other top-10 GCU players include senior
Josh McCabe ( tied for 3rd, 3 under) and freshmen
Matthew Diehl (tied for sixth, 2 under) and
Nixon Lauritzen (tied for ninth, 1 under). McCabe and Lauritzen are competing as individual entries, while Diehl followed up his first-place outing in Scottsdale two days ago with 12 birdies Tuesday and a 3-under first round.
Lopes senior
Kiko Coelho is tied for 12th at even, followed by another GCU individual entry, freshman
Campbell Kerr, at 1 over in a tie for 15th. Six of the 23 golfers tied for a top-15 spot are from GCU.
Rounding out the starting five are juniors
Antonio Bulgheroni in 31st (3 over) and
Sam Murphy in 70th (8 over). Sophomore
Gavin O'Neill, also an individual entry, is 41st at 4 over.
