Grand Canyon was coming off a three-match losing streak when they hit the road for Texas this weekend. The Lopes came home with a .500 record, a winning streak and newfound confidence.
GCU 4, Stephen F. Austin 3 (Saturday)
The Lopes took the doubles the point despite losing 6-1 on Court 1. GCUÂ veterans
Dania Deaifi, a junior, and
Valentina Del Marco, a senior, paired up for the first time this season to win Court 2, and Lopes freshmen
Bella Crossman and
Angelina Mihajlovic took the Court 3 match to give GCU the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
The doubles point was an important one Saturday, as the singles courts split 3-3. Courts 2-4 won their matches for the Lopes, as sophomore
Gala Arangio moved to 3-1 with her win, taking it in straight sets. Deaifi took Court 3 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over SFA's Jemma Cave. Crossman continued her tear to start the season with a three-set victory on Court 4. Crossman moved to 4-0 in singles, just dropping her second set all season.
GCU 4, UT Arlington 1 (Sunday)
GCU (3-3) dominated singles on Sunday in Arlington to take the Texas weekend sweep. After losing the first two doubles courtss, the Lopes were immediately down a point.Â
Courts 2-5 clinched the victory for the Lopes, with Deaifi, Arangio and Crossman each collecting their second singles wins in as many days. All three won in straight sets, with Crossman moving to 5-0 and Arangio going to 4-1 on the season.
Mihajlovic won via forfeit on Court 5, giving the Lopes the first of their four points needed for the win. Del Marco was up a set and lead 4-2 in the second set on Court 6, and freshman
Karina Hofbauer spllit the first two sets on Court 1 when the team match ended with a 4-1 GCU victory — a great sign for a potential future matchup with the Mavericks in the WAC Tournament.
GCU returns to California next weekend with matches at Fresno State and Pacific on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
