LIHUE, Hawaii – Grand Canyon recorded 32 birdies and saw four of its six players shoot even par or better on moving day Friday in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Hokuala Course.
GCU shot 6 under par and is 11th out of 17 programs at 8 over par. After a first round that saw only three teams shoot even par or better, 10 carded under-par scorecards. The Lopes are five shots back from eighth place, while Utah leads the field at 15 under.
Lopes freshman
Matthew Diehl set a new personal best Friday, carding a 65 to go 5 under with six birdies on the day. Diehl beat his previous best of 67 from the fall and jumped 31 spots to 16th place at 2 under par for the tournament. He sits six shots back of the overall lead entering Saturday's final round.
GCU graduate Tomasso Zorzetto, playing as an individual, tallied five birdies and a 68 scorecard to move him 18 spots up at 1 over par. Zorzetto birdied three of his final eight holes and is 29th overall.
Every Lopes player had at least five birdies on the day, with senior
Kiko Coelho tallying five and an even par round. Coelho is 50th overall and second place on the Lopes squad. GCU freshman
Nixon Lauritzen wiped away his first-round score of 7 over with a second round of 2 under, recording five birdies with four over his final six holes. Lauritzen moved 25 spots and is tied for 57th.

Gavin O'Neill at 5 over, who shot 1 over with a team-high seven birdies Friday. Lopes junior
Sam Murphy is 72nd at 7 over, carding a 4-over second round.
The third and final round play begins Saturday with a shotgun start at noon (Phoenix time).
Day 1 results
Grand Canyon began the spring campaign in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course Hokuala on Thursday afternoon.
The field, with seven teams ranked in the top 40 of the Clippd national rankings, saw only one team finish under par Thursday with two others at even and the Lopes tied for 12th out of 17 schools at 14 over par.
A pair of Lopes carded 3-over rounds to tie for 47th overall. Diehl and Murphy lead the Lopes through 18 holes, with Diehl totaling three birdies and Murphy recording a par on eight of his final nine holes.
One shot behind those two are another duo in Coelho and O'Neill, who each carded a 4-over score to tie for 55th. Lauritzen is 82nd at 7 over, tallying a squad- high four birdies including three straight on holes 1-3.
Zorzetto also shot 3 over par as an individual entry with two birdies.
The Lopes finished the first round tied for fourth in pars among a 17-team field, totaling 53.
Second-round play continues Friday with a shotgun start beginning at noon (Phoenix time).
