Junior Diouf, the freshman sensation from Thies, Senegal, was named one of five finalists for TopDrawerSoccer's Player of the Year. TopDrawerSoccer is one of college soccer's leading media entities that covers the college and high school ranks.
Diouf finished his season with 18 goals, 42 points, 79 shots, 36 shots on goal and seven game-winners, helping lead the Lopes to a Sweet 16 berth and a 14-4-5 record. The goal is leading the nation, with only North Carolina State's Donavan Phillips (17 goals) and Georgetown's Zach Zengue (14 goals) ranking in the top 10 and still playing on active NCAA Touranment teams.
Diouf came to Grand Canyon via New Jersey's St. Benedict's Prep, the top-ranked preparatory school via United Soccer Coaches in 2024. Entering the season opener against Jacksonville as a late substitute, the season-long story of the country's top freshman was formed with two goals over the last 10 minutes to seal a 2-1 victory for the Lopes.
For Lopes fans, they know how the story unfolds. For those who may not know, the story includes five braces, 15 games with at least a point, setting the new GCU Division-I era single-season program record for goals and points, and earning WAC Offensive Player of the Year and WAC Freshman of the Year.
Diouf is on track to lead the nation in goals as a freshman, the first to do that at the D-I level since Conor Casey of Portland in 1999.
GCU's No. 9 was instrumental to a Lopes team that finished with the second-most wins of the program's D-I era, tied for most wins at GCU Stadium (nine) and helped guide the team to the Sweet 16, the furthest the program has gone since becoming eligible for the NCAA Division I Tournament in 2017.
Diouf joins Hofstra's Laurie Goddard, Furman's Diego Hernandez, High Point's Daniel Lugo and Georgetown's Zach Zengue as the finalists for the honor.
TopDrawerSoccer will announce the winner next week.
