ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – One tournament removed from a second-place outing in Maricopa to open the 2024-25 campaign, Grand Canyon moved its momentum from one course to another, finishing second after the first two rounds of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Friday.
With one round to play Saturday, GCU's young core once again put the Lopes out in front early and paced the team to an 11-under scorecard through 36 holes. In a 17-team field, GCU trails only host New Mexico (21 under) at UNM Championship Course.
Lopes freshmen
Matthew Diehl and
Nixon Lauritzen, in their second collegiate tournaments, each sit in the top 10 entering the final round.
Diehl is tied for third (5 under) while Lauritzen is one stroke back of him in a tie for seventh (4 under). Of the 96 golfers, all five Lopes finished the two-round day in the top 50 as the Lopes hold a one-stroke lead over third-place Colorado. Long Beach State (6 under) and Arkansas State (2 under), which were NCAA regional teams a season ago, are in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Diehl began his day with a 1-under first round, finishing with three birdies, 11 pars and one bogey over his final 14 holes. His entire round was even more impressive, totaling five birdies with just one bogey to shoot a 68.
Lauritzen, who carded a 63 in his first-ever GCU round a week ago, shot a 69 in the first round with five birdies and an eagle, the first of his college career. Lauritzen had three birdies through his first six holes of the second round before ending the day with a 71.
GCU graduate
Tommaso Zorzetto is in the top 25 after two rounds of action at even par, tallying a three-birdie score of 74 score in the first round. Zorzetto locked in for the second round, when he carded seven birdies and a round of 70 to move into a tie for the eighth-most birdies in the field (10).
The Lopes' 38 birdies is the third-highest total and they were one of three teams with multiple eagles Friday. GCU sophomore
Gavin O'Neill joined Lauritzen in that category, eagling the par-5 14th hole in his second round. O'Neill shot 70 and 77 with five birdies in the first round to help tie for 47th.
Graduate
Kiko Coelho is tied for 36th in his second tournament as a Lope, countering any bogeys he had with quick birdies. Coelho is 2 over entering Tuesday after making six birdies and shooting even in the second round, when he was 2 under over his final 16 holes.
The final round begins Saturday morning. Live results from Friday can be found
