A local high school standout and junior college All-American,
Nelson Gomez Rodriguez, has joined the Grand Canyon men's soccer squad heading into this fall's season.

Gomez Rodriguez is the seventh player with All-American credentials at a previous level to sign with the Lopes this summer. He is also the fifth Arizona native to join the team under Lopes first-year head coach George Kiefer's staff, moving GCU's total to seven local or statewide products on the squad.

A native of Phoenix who graduated from Carl Hayden High School, Gomez Rodriguez enters GCU as a junior with two years of eligibility remaining after spending the past two seasons at nearby Glendale Community College. At GCC, he totaled 41 points with 15 goals and 11 assists in 24 games, earning a spot on the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference first team, as well as his All-American honor with the National Junior College Athletic Association.

At Carl Hayden, Gomez Rodriguez was named the state 5A Player of the Year. He played club ball for Tuzos Academy in Phoenix, where he won a state championship title. He also trained with Phoenix Rising of the United Soccer League.

GCU opens its 18-game regular season on Aug. 22 at home versus Western Illinois. The Lopes host Yavapai College in an exhibition game on Aug. 17.
