George Kiefer enters his first season at the helm of the men's soccer program at Grand Canyon, and his first signee is a lauded NAIA All-American and former National Gatorade Player of the Year in Jony Muñoz.
Hailing from Olathe, Kansas, Muñoz enters the 2024 fall campaign as a senior, previously playing two seasons at Kansas City and two seasons at MidAmerican Nazarene University.
Muñoz began his collegiate career at Kansas City, where he started in 17 of 20 games played and tallied eight goals, four assists, 20 points and registered a .513 shot-on-goal percentage. He entered his freshman year ranked No. 15 on TopDrawerSoccer.com's freshman ranked list and earned All-Summit second team and Summit League All-Newcomer that same season.
The Olathe (Kansas) West High School alumnus transferred to NAIA program MidAmerican Nazarene in 2022, when he spent the last two seasons tallying 19 goals, 12 assists, 50 points, eight game-winning goals and a .487 shot-on-goal percentage. Muñoz had 12 goals and eight assists alone last season en route to NAIA All-American honors, an award he also received following his junior year in 2022.
Muñoz played an integral piece to MidAmerican Nazarene's success last season, aiding the team to a 17-4-4 record and a national championship. Muñoz was named to the all-tournament team while also making all-conference first team.
Prior to his collegiate playing career, Muñoz was named National Gatorade Player of the Year in 2020 for Olathe West, where he led the team to the Kansas 6A state championship as a senior. He became the first Kansan to ever win the National Gatorade Player of the Year honor, and added two-time Sunflower League Player of the Year and Allstate All-American and All-America first-team awards to his high school resume.
Muñoz will join All-WAC Freshman Team recipient
Jorge Lopez in the midfield, with All-WAC first-team forward
Bright Nutornutsi returning after a nine-goal, four-assist season in 2023.
