EL MACERO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team sits near the top of the leaderboard through Day 2 of the El Macero Classic at El Macero Country Club with a third place, 14-over score.
GCU is three shots back of leader Saint Mary's and two shots behind CSU Northridge entering Sunday's final round.
The Lopes shot 14 over Saturday with nine birdies, but much like Friday's first round, found a spark on the back nine with six of their nine birdies happening toward the end of play.
GCU senior
Tommaso Zorzetto maintained his spot at the top of the 104-player field, tying for first place through two rounds at even par. Zorzetto shot 1 over Saturday after a 1-under Friday with two birdies, including two over his final four holes to put himself in prime position for medalist honors.
Lopes freshman
Gavin O'Neill shot 4 over in the second round and is tied for 23rd at 7 over. O'Neill birdied his first hole and ended the day with a birdie and three pars over his final four holes.
GCU senior
Nicky Kling and junior teammate
Josh McCabe are tied for 30th at 8 over. The duo each had two birdies Saturday. Senior
Matthew Pennington is tied for 48th at 11 over and registered the most birdies of any Lope with three.
Seeking its fourth team title of the season, GCU will finish the El Macero Classic on Sunday.
Day 1 recap
It was a tale of two different nines for the Grand Canyon men's golf team on Day 1 of the El Macero Classic at El Macero Country Club. After having two birdies and an eagle on the front nine, the Lopes rebounded with seven birdies and an eagle over the back nine to card a 6-over team score that earned the first-round lead Friday.
In an 18-team field, six teams finished 15 over par or better. GCU leads second-place California Baptist by two strokes and is four strokes ahead of third-place San Diego.
Among the 104 players, only Zorzetto carded an under-par round to lead the field at 1 under. Zorzetto was 3 over through his front nine with four bogeys and a birdie but ended his day with no blemishes on the back nine and two birdies. His final hole boosted himself into the lead and GCU even higher up the team leaderboard as he recorded an eagle on the par-5 18th.
Two strokes back of Zorzetto is O'Neill, who shot 1 over with two birdies and an on eagle No. 5. Kling shot 2 over and is tied for 10th, putting three Lopes in the top 10 through the first round. Kling had two birdies for his day with five pars over his final seven holes.
McCabe is tied for 32nd at 4 over, followed by Pennington in a tie for 69th at 8 over.
Of the seven Lopes birdies on the back nine, six came between holes 14 and 15. Zorzetto, O'Neill and McCabe each carded back-to-back birdies on those holes.
The second round begins Saturday morning, followed by the third and final round on Sunday.
