TEMPE, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team battled hard against No. 22 Arizona State in a 4-0 loss at Whiteman Tennis Center on Friday.
The Lopes (2-4) competed from the start, dropping a close doubles point before challenging the Sun Devils (8-4) on all six singles courts.
Arizona State took the 1-0 lead after doubles with wins on Courts 1 and 3. Senior

Jonathan Da Silva lost 6-3 on Court 3 while graduate
Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore
David Wekesa were locked in a close match on the top court. The Lopes lost 7-5 to give the point to the Sun Devils. Court 2 was left unfinished with GCU's
Paolo Rosati and
Pablo Carretero Salvador trailing 6-5.
Arizona State pushed its advantage in singles, winning the first set on five courts. The only court that GCU took the first set was at No. 3 with Wekesa. The GCU sophomore continued to impress after winning a pair of matches last week to jump out to a 6-4 first set win on Friday. Wekesa was close to winning his match, leading 5-0 in the second set, but Arizona State clinched the dual match first, so it was left unfinished.
At the other courts, Arizona State finished off matches in straight sets. Da Silva lost by retirement at 6-2, 3-0 on Court 4 while Rosati fell in straight sets at Court 6. The dual match was clinched at the top court with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sullwald.
The Lopes will be back in action Saturday at GCU Tennis Facility agianst Nevada at 10:30 a.m.\
