The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to Nevada at GCU Tennis Facility on Saturday morning.
The Lopes (2-6) nearly completed the comeback in singles, but the doubles point ended up being the difference at the end of the match.
Nevada (2-6) started the day by winning the doubles point. The Wolfpack defeated GCU's
Paolo Rosati and
Pablo Carretero Salvador 6-1 at Court 2, and GCU's
Gerhard Sullwald and David Wekeksa 6-3 on Court 1 to clinch the point. At Court 3, GCU senior
Wyatt Anderson and junior
Jonathan Da Silva were leading 5-4 when their match was left unfinished.
In singles, the Lopes battled back to win a trio of matches. At Court 3, Wekesa picked up his third win by a score of 7-6, 6-2 while the Lopes also took both matches at the bottom courts. After dropping his first set 6-4, Rosati regrouped and won the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-2, at Court 5. Meanwhile at No. 6, it was Anderson who jumped to an early advantage with a first-set win before ultimately winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Nevada was able to clinch the dual-match win with straight-set wins at Courts 2 and 4, along with a win by retirement over Salvador at the top court. Salvador retired after losing the first set 6-4 and faced a 4-2 deficit in the second set.
The Lopes will compete in the three-day Diablo College Tennis Invitational next weekend in Tempe.
