TEMPE, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped its opening match of the Diablos College Tennis Invitational to No. 9 Arizona 4-0.
The Lopes (2-7) battled hard against multiple ranked opponents in singles and doubles. With the loss, GCU will face VCU on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe.
Arizona (10-2) took a 1-0 lead after doubles with a pair of wins. The 11th-ranked duo of Colton Smith and Jay Friend defeated GCU graduate
Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore
David Wekesa 6-4. The Wildcats clinched the point with a 6-3 win at the third court over the Lopes'
Wyatt Anderson and
Jonathan Da Silva.
With the early lead in hand, the Wildcats pushed their advantage in singles. Anderson fell in straight sets at Court 6 and sophomore
Alfred Almasi fell 6-1, 6-0 to No. 43 Gustaf Storm. The dual-match win was clinched with a straight-set win over GCU junior
Jonathan Da Silva at Court 4.
The Lopes will be in Tempe all weekend with two more matches on the docket at Kiwanis Tennis Center.
